President's Day Bingo

With a long weekend to look forward to, what better way to wrap up the Monday night than booze and bingo?
After a rockin' time at Bigfoot Lodge's Sunday night Bingo last week I realized that Bingo hangovers are much better than the usual Monday morning hangover. So to be faithful to my favorite Bingo callers, Bingo Boy and the incomparable Smokey Lounge, I am re-posting their invite to Bingo this Monday night at Akbar. I've also re-printed their presidential facts, in case you haven't gotten enough President's Day trivia.

Dear Bingo Freaks,

HAPPY PRESIDENT'S DAY! For your enjoyment, a bit of trivia about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln:

GEORGE WASHINGTON
Washington was the only Founding Father to free his slaves.

He was the only president who did not live in Washington D.C.

As a farmer, Washington grew marijuana on his farm and promoted it's growth.

As a farmer, he is credited with introducing the mule to America.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Lincoln had a cat named "Bob," a turkey named "Jack," and a dog named "Jib."

He was the first president to be photographed at his inauguration. John Wilkes Booth (his assassin) can be seen standing close to Lincoln in the picture.

Lincoln was the only president to receive a patent, for a device for lifting boats over shoals.

Abraham Lincoln was shot while watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. The same play was also running at the McVerick Theatre in Chicago
on May 18, 1860, the day Lincoln was nominated for president in that city.

Lincoln's favorite sport was wrestling. (Hence all of those "Lincoln was gay" rumors).

In honor of these two great presidents, AKBAR, the coolest bar in Silverlake is presenting CLUB LUCKY BALLS- an evening of Martini-scented Bingo (don't bring the kids).

Hosted by BINGO-BOY and SMOKEY LOUNGE, the night will rock with ten games, ten prize packages (including top shelf booze) and will benefit THE LIFE GROUP L.A. The Life Group LA is a coalition of people dedicated to the education, empowerment and emotional support of persons both infected and affected by HIV/AIDS so that they may make informed choices and decisions regarding their healthcare and personal well being.

A great cause and a great way to round out your three day weekend. Give a little, get a lot!

Love,
Bingo Boy

Dowtown Ice Skating

Did you know LA has it's own Rockefeller Center? Okay, so the rink isn't that big and there's no 80 foot lit Christmas tree but the atmosphere at the downtown Pershing Square skating rink is just as festive. All winter long ('til the middle of January) the skating rink is open for business thanks to LA Parks & Rec. There will even be free concerts, outdoor movies, and lunchtime fun for all the downtown worker bees. Spaceland will host local bands on Thursday. Movies on Wednesday. Swing bands on Sunday. Disco cover bands on Fridays. Here's a schedule of the highlights:

12/7 Spaceland on Ice: Very Be Careful 9:00pm
12/14 Spaceland on Ice: The Submarines, Great Northern 7:00pm
12/20 Glide in Movies: It's A Wonderful Life 7:00pm
12/21 Spaceland on Ice: Los Abandoned 8:00pm
12/27 Glide in Movies: ET 7:00pm
12/28 Spaceland on Ice: Upground 8:00pm
1/4 Spaceland on Ice: Eskimohunter, Bodies of Water 7:00pm
1/11 Spaceland on Ice: Restaurant 9:00pm

$6 unlimited skating. $2 skates rental.
Ride the Metro and you're right there at the Pershing Square station and you get (1) free skate rental with your ticket. Otherwise convenient underground parking garage validates.

Babydoll Brawl

The LA Derby Dolls are breaking in their new crop of fierce roller skatin' athletes with the Babydoll Brawl. It's a banked track bout where two brand new teams, the Glam Reapers and pink Juggernauts, will duke it out and prove they can battle in fierce derby competition. Most of the girls will be fighting on the banked track for the first time. This is one of the two only places in the country you'll see the ladies fly on the banked track (vs. flat ground) As always it's an event not to be missed. Refreshments and live entertainment come with the sporting event. $5 parking; $12 general admission; $20 for VIP. Advance tickets here or cash at the door. I'm rooting for the Juggernauts' new girls Titty-Titty Bang-Bang and Laguna Bitch.

Saturday, Dec. 2
Little Tokyo Shopping Mall, Top Floor
333 S. Alameda & 3rd Street
6:30pm (5:00pm doors)

Scavenger Hunt - Postponed

A letter from LA Scavenger Hunt :

The LA Scavenger Hunt has been postponed untill April of 2007.

The reason for the cancellation is my health. I have been having a stomach problem for weeks and a few days back it hit a peak. It was then I realized that I needed to take a break and focus on my health. Basically, I need to rest. I apologize to all those looking forward to the hunt on Saturday. I hope you still come out in April and I promise it will be just as amazing.

Take care,
Sean Carlson

Please repost this. The last thing that I would like is people showing up on Saturday afternoon expecting to be a part of an event that is cancelled. thanks a bunch.

From the folks who brought you the Fuck Yeah Fest, comes LA Scavenger Hunt the Sequel. This Saturday all you need is $5, a polaroid camera, a team of 5 or less, the hours of 1:00-7:00pm open, and an openess to some hipster stunts, all for a chance to win $5,000 worth of prizes. It's an all ages event, but alchoholic treats will be supplied for those 21+. And the proceeds go to bringing an all ages venue back to Long Beach. So come out and support the kiddies and their need for good music and a venue to wear tight pants to.
P.S. I'm starting a team!

Roller Derby Smackdown in Little Tokyo

Not too long ago I attended my first Roller Derby banked track bout. That's when the girls play an indoor track with more speed and more spills. After a year of logistical nigthmares, the LA Derby Dolls have their home for their four fierce teams back, the top floor of the Little Tokyo mall downtown. Saturday is the championship bout which wraps up the main season. They'll fill the floor with independent vendors, two bars, a beer garden, and a live band stage all to entertain the crowd. But everyone's there to see the top LA teams, Sirens and Fight Crew duke it out. The Sirens tough defense was no match for Fight Crew at the last bout as they were consistently lapped by Fight Crew's speed, possibly the fastest team on the West Coast right now. Fight Crew gained an unheard of 20 point lead. I think it's time for an upset and the crowd will be psyched for one. Roller skates, rockabilly, and sushi all under one roof? Too good to be true.

Saturday November 4, 2006 - 8PM (Doors @ 6:30PM)
333 S Alameda (Alameda & 3rd St) Los Angeles
Little Tokyo Shopping Center - Top Floor
General Admission for $15 gets you standing room. VIP tickets for $35 guarantees a special seat. Parking $5

P.S. Even though this is the final match of the season, check back for details of the Amatuer bout on Dec. 2 - where all the new Derby Dolls take the infamous banked track for the first time.

Dirty Bingo

Last night one of my girls called me out to Dirty Bingo at Akbar and I couldn't think of a more fun way to drink away a Monday night. Did you know gay bars and Bingo go hand in fabulous hand? Remember that one Sex & The City episode where the girls played drag queen bingo? Legendary Bingo hosts games every Wednesday night at Hamburger Mary's with all the card money going to charities. No drag queens at Akbar last night, but we did get Club Lucky Balls Bingo with the charmingly sarcastic Bingo Boy calling the balls and the dapper lizard Smokey Lounge entertaining the crowd. With East-sider pride, proceeds went to the Silver Lake Conservatory of Music and some prizes were donated by Living Room. My table of hags got to be known as the Charlie's Angels with yours truly taking the Farrah Fawcett nickname. Everyone got to yell Bingo expect me - so I'm bringing the game next time. If you sign up for legendary email list you get double game sheets - that's 20 chances to win for $20.
