Oddica t-shirts have these sweet designs as well as dozens others. Done up by local designers on American Apparel shirts and hoodies they often employ vintage screen printing methods. And the price is right at $15 for t-shirt and $38 for a hoodie.Pudgy Girl at 18:33
"From Los Angeles to Chile to around the world and back again, Los Abandoned reunites the Casio keyboard with gritty electric guitars and the bittersweet ukulele in their post-punk/latin alternative influenced sound. Los Abandoned is taking over the scene with their bilingual blend of hooky, high-energy pop/rock and retro-folklore sounds." - BioPudgy Girl at 17:04

The LA Derby Dolls are breaking in their new crop of fierce roller skatin' athletes with the Babydoll Brawl. It's a banked track bout where two brand new teams, the Glam Reapers and pink Juggernauts, will duke it out and prove they can battle in fierce derby competition. Most of the girls will be fighting on the banked track for the first time. This is one of the two only places in the country you'll see the ladies fly on the banked track (vs. flat ground) As always it's an event not to be missed. Refreshments and live entertainment come with the sporting event. $5 parking; $12 general admission; $20 for VIP. Advance tickets here or cash at the door. I'm rooting for the Juggernauts' new girls Titty-Titty Bang-Bang and Laguna Bitch.Pudgy Girl at 11:35

Before I get started with the holiday shopping guides, I'd like to offset the large amount of consuming done this time of year by supporting a worthy challenge. The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday because that's the day the major department stores get out of the red due to all the sales on the first official holiday shopping day. What was once the day where you could get that item on little Timmy's list for a bargain has turned into the biggest display of Americans as consumption fanatics. It's been reported that this year the stores will open even earlier, some right at 12:01 am the get the shopping started with a bang. Across the country people will finish stuffing themselves with turkey and stuffing and then head out to the malls to wait in line through the night in order to be the first people through the doors. In past years, people have been trampled on Black Friday, anxiety and heart attacks are not uncommon by shoppers and store staff alike. Adbusters urges us to stop the mass consumption all together. I like a good deal myself and know that Black Friday is not the only day to get it nor is a giant department store the only place to find gifts. So the plan is simple. On November 24 buy nothing. My mom and I have celebrated in the past by sleeping in late, eating thanksgiving leftovers and going for a hike. Other buy nothing supporters across the country are reporting this year to cut up credit cards or dress up as zombies and parade the mall with the legions of mindless shoppers. There are many reasons for joining in. Off-set what may go down as the year global warming really hit. Escape the marketing mind games brought on by commercials and embrace your own holiday vision. Be it a non-stressed day at home with the fam, or a full-on protest assault, the biggest pay-off is to keep the Buy Nothing Day spirit in your heart year round and make responsible purchases if you must purchase at all.Labels: environmental, politics, shopping

Vice Magazine, known for promoting global hedonism (not to mention their dos and donts page I'm re-obsessed with) is coming out with a new DVD this month. The Vice Guide to Travel. It's not a lonely planet guide on film by any means, more like a primer to where the largest illegal arms dealers are in the world, or where drug lords go to party in Rio de Janeiro, or what really is going down in Chernobyl right now. Johnny Knoxville and David Cross round out a group of celebrity and daring journalists' journeys to the center of these non-vacation destinations. The mini-trailer is enough to scare me away from Pakistan for a while longer.Pudgy Girl at 14:32

Once upon a time in the 1960s frogs hopped out of the LA river and invaded a small neighborhood. The 'hood in the Elysian Valley tucked between the I-5 and 2-North freeways has been nicknamed Frogtown ever since.
Tomorrow night the galleries, warehouses and shops off Riverside open their doors. Lovecraft Biofuels will hold a conversion demonstration at their new second headquarters. An entire loft building hosts original photography and art. Famed LA artists Sharon & Frank Romero open the Lil Frogtown Gallery. There's also a couple emerging architecture firms extending Frogtown hospitality.Pudgy Girl at 19:50

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council is holding a town hall style meeting tonight in conjunction with the other East LA neighborhoods to speak out about the city's new budget plans for the coming year. Hosted by The Department of Neighborhood Empowerment and the Office of the Mayor, this community forum hopes to give neighborhood voices a chance to be heard. The city will outline their plan for next year, probably cutting the budget drastically. This is every local's chance to add what's missing to the city's outlook for 2007 or remove measures. If you can't make the meeting but would like to express your opinion take the mayor's survey. It's very straight-forward and enlightening to know what the city thinks should be its major improvements including fair housing, transportation, environmental protection, and security. The survey takes less than 10 minutes and appears to be a good way to make a little dent in the system before the system dents you.Labels: environmental, local, politics

The gallery known as Junc throws an opening for two image designer/illustrators. Justin Wood throws linear and non-linear storytelling into his technology inspired illustrations and gets quite a bit of magazine work. Highly recognized Oksana Badrak's illustrations explore otherworldly elements and get a little naughty. You can buy her prints through Thumbtack Press, a great online art resource.

The reason for the cancellation is my health. I have been having a stomach problem for weeks and a few days back it hit a peak. It was then I realized that I needed to take a break and focus on my health. Basically, I need to rest. I apologize to all those looking forward to the hunt on Saturday. I hope you still come out in April and I promise it will be just as amazing.
Take care,
Sean Carlson
Please repost this. The last thing that I would like is people showing up on Saturday afternoon expecting to be a part of an event that is cancelled. thanks a bunch.

They're the download of the week on Latino iTunes. They're all over the radio and making playlists of years all over country. They're new band to me: Los Abandoned. You may have heard their single "Stalk U" over and over on KROQ and Indie 103.1 and like me, was dubious at first to say the least. It sounded like it could be the Suicide Girls' debut album. The chorus is too repetitive; too neo-Green Day. But after the sixth or seventh air play the lyrics become perfectly profound and outrageously catchy as the listener follows a girl's obsession with an art student who "looks like a Charlie" and creates Drew Barrymore installations. The rest of the album pays tribute to the band's bilingual background proving more Spanglish enhanced melodies in songs like "Van Nuys (es very nice)" the story of a young punk going to the Valley. "Me Quieren en Chile" had some airplay last year on KCRW's world music hour. A pop-punk song completely in Spanish that never loses a contemporary nor interpersonal edge. Lady P on lead vocals has been around the LA music scene for quite some years but her youthful energy backed by Casios and electric guitars sounds super fresh even to this gringas ears.Pudgy Girl at 11:54
David Alfaro Siqueiros, was a prolific artist and activist but only created three murals in the United States, all in Los Angeles during a six-month stay in 1932. Two of his works were censored while the third, less controversial one was moved to Santa Barbara. Thursday evening KPCC's Patt Morrison will moderate a discussion about Siqueiros, his murals, LA history, and public art. This is a public program part of an ongoing speaker series for a future exhibition, Legacy & Legend: Siqueiros & América Tropical Censorship Defied, sponsored by The Los Angeles Times and Washington Mutual. The event is free but there's limited seating. Ensure a reservation by responding to legacy@causeconnect.net no later than Wednesday Nov. 8 Noon. May need to show photo ID at door.

From the folks who brought you the Fuck Yeah Fest, comes LA Scavenger Hunt the Sequel. This Saturday all you need is $5, a polaroid camera, a team of 5 or less, the hours of 1:00-7:00pm open, and an openess to some hipster stunts, all for a chance to win $5,000 worth of prizes. It's an all ages event, but alchoholic treats will be supplied for those 21+. And the proceeds go to bringing an all ages venue back to Long Beach. So come out and support the kiddies and their need for good music and a venue to wear tight pants to. Labels: games

Everyone I know who moved to LA in the last couple of years always asked, what's that big dome building at the top of Griffith Park? Since closing its doors for massive renovation in 2002, the Griffith Observatory & Planetarium has remained that mysterious landmark more known for a movie backdrop than housing the most looked through telescope in the world. Amazing, huh? Now hundreds more will get a chance to peek through the observatory's two world famous telescopes as well as experience the same attractions guests did at original opening almost 70 years ago, like Tesla spheres and scaled planet models. Ever wonder what you would weigh on Venus? They have special scales for every planet's unique gravity. The planetarium still hosts its live starshow, made famous in Rebel Without A Cause, but has modern-day visual effects thrown into the classic showcase of galaxies and constellations. The Observatory has a new theater too, thanks to Leonard "Spock" Nemoy. For now the Observatory will be the top of every tourist and Angeleno's list of things to do, and you'll have to book a reservation to ride one of the shuttles up the hill until parking opens up. Two stops are at the Zoo and Hollywood & Highland. On the bus your visit to the Observatory will begin with informational videos and guides on board. Parking is also available at the Greek Theater for those who want to hike or bike up the hill. You'll still need to make a reservation and can only do so 48 hours in advance. So the question is, is it worth it to go now? The hiking and planetarium show sound like a great weekend date but I'm waiting a little longer to enjoy the entire facility when special exhibits and other films start making their way in. Or join up the Volunteer Program in February 2007. Reservations and shuttles will still be necessary for probably quite some time and hopefully they don't plan on expanding the parking lot at the top. I don't ever want to look up into the Hollywood Hills and see traffic.Labels: events, newsworthy

Not too long ago I attended my first Roller Derby banked track bout. That's when the girls play an indoor track with more speed and more spills. After a year of logistical nigthmares, the LA Derby Dolls have their home for their four fierce teams back, the top floor of the Little Tokyo mall downtown. Saturday is the championship bout which wraps up the main season. They'll fill the floor with independent vendors, two bars, a beer garden, and a live band stage all to entertain the crowd. But everyone's there to see the top LA teams, Sirens and Fight Crew duke it out. The Sirens tough defense was no match for Fight Crew at the last bout as they were consistently lapped by Fight Crew's speed, possibly the fastest team on the West Coast right now. Fight Crew gained an unheard of 20 point lead. I think it's time for an upset and the crowd will be psyched for one. Roller skates, rockabilly, and sushi all under one roof? Too good to be true.Pudgy Girl at 13:58
