Gifts for Star Wars Nerds

Let the gift guide officially begin. As the holiday season clutches it's grinch-like grip upon us I'll be highlighting some toys for good girls & boys in the form of local and indie designers. First up, for the Star Wars fan with wit:

Oddica t-shirts have these sweet designs as well as dozens others. Done up by local designers on American Apparel shirts and hoodies they often employ vintage screen printing methods. And the price is right at $15 for t-shirt and $38 for a hoodie.

Oddica has a unique profit-sharing model for the artists, so you won't see any screenprinters getting ripped off and exploited to Hot Topic. Along with Thinkspace, they're holding a gallery of the shirts this weekend. See the designs up close and personal or buy online.

"Cotton To Canvas" special 2-night only event showcasing the artists of Oddica
Opening Reception: Saturday, Dec. 2nd, 2006 from 7pm until 11pm
Show Runs: through Sunday, Dec. 3rd. Gallery hours 1pm - 6pm

Thinkspace Gallery
4210 Santa Monica Blvd.

Los Abandoned @ The Echo

"From Los Angeles to Chile to around the world and back again, Los Abandoned reunites the Casio keyboard with gritty electric guitars and the bittersweet ukulele in their post-punk/latin alternative influenced sound. Los Abandoned is taking over the scene with their bilingual blend of hooky, high-energy pop/rock and retro-folklore sounds." - Bio

I hope they play "Office X-Mas Party" so that can be in my head when I have to attend my office's x-mas party.

The War Boys

No - that's not the nickname you gave your little brothers for fighting over the last of the turkey-day leftovers - it's a play - in fact it's a fascinating look at three Texans, masculinity, border town politics and a more than needed wake-up call for our current immigration affairs. The Fountain Theatre is hosting a staged reading Tuesday night. The more people that come, the more the Fountain will want to put it up on the main stage. Please come out and support new LA theater director Danielle Holland and her cast.

Tuesday, Dec. 5
8:00 pm
Presented at The Fountain Theatre
a reading of THE WAR BOYS by Naomi Wallace
directed by Danielle Holland
featuring

Jordan Levinson
Ammar Mahmood

Babydoll Brawl

The LA Derby Dolls are breaking in their new crop of fierce roller skatin' athletes with the Babydoll Brawl. It's a banked track bout where two brand new teams, the Glam Reapers and pink Juggernauts, will duke it out and prove they can battle in fierce derby competition. Most of the girls will be fighting on the banked track for the first time. This is one of the two only places in the country you'll see the ladies fly on the banked track (vs. flat ground) As always it's an event not to be missed. Refreshments and live entertainment come with the sporting event. $5 parking; $12 general admission; $20 for VIP. Advance tickets here or cash at the door. I'm rooting for the Juggernauts' new girls Titty-Titty Bang-Bang and Laguna Bitch.

Shopping down south

While I was away on turkey day, visiting family and friends back home in Encinitas, I came across some pleasant surprises in my sleepy home beach towns. It's definately worth a trip down south when the holiday pressure comes on.

Beach Grass Cafe
159 South Highway 101
Solana Beach, CA 92075
858.509.0632
Could not be a more perfect brunch place. The servings are huge but the food is healthy. Something I didn't know: They ranked #7 in the country for the best pancakes by AOL travel. It's no wonder. I had the blue corn pancakes with pineapple. It was like a navajo pineapple upside down cake. So sweet and cripsy you didn't need the butter and syrup. Their turkey hash is a favorite too - nice and spicy and a good combo with a mimosa, served in a large glass.

Grounded
25 East E Street
Encinitas, CA 92024
760.230.1563
The best holiday shopping this year is local shopping. This home & mainly garden shop has the prettiest gifts. They've got all the modern planters I tought I would never find outside of Palm Springs. Last year I was fortunate enough to receive one of their vases made especially for bulbs. The roots can get a little icky, so fill it with pretty pebbles.

Anthropologie
Forum at Carlsbad #4-158
Carlsbad, CA 92009
760.436.9110
Fashion has hi
t the strip malls. Their sales rack is impressively full with even more discounts being taken at the register (not something I can claim for all of the chain stores). I found the perfect soap dish I will use for collecting jewelry on my desk instead of soap for $4. Not to mention my dream silk dress.

Buy Nothing Day is November 24

Before I get started with the holiday shopping guides, I'd like to offset the large amount of consuming done this time of year by supporting a worthy challenge. The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday because that's the day the major department stores get out of the red due to all the sales on the first official holiday shopping day. What was once the day where you could get that item on little Timmy's list for a bargain has turned into the biggest display of Americans as consumption fanatics. It's been reported that this year the stores will open even earlier, some right at 12:01 am the get the shopping started with a bang. Across the country people will finish stuffing themselves with turkey and stuffing and then head out to the malls to wait in line through the night in order to be the first people through the doors. In past years, people have been trampled on Black Friday, anxiety and heart attacks are not uncommon by shoppers and store staff alike. Adbusters urges us to stop the mass consumption all together. I like a good deal myself and know that Black Friday is not the only day to get it nor is a giant department store the only place to find gifts. So the plan is simple. On November 24 buy nothing. My mom and I have celebrated in the past by sleeping in late, eating thanksgiving leftovers and going for a hike. Other buy nothing supporters across the country are reporting this year to cut up credit cards or dress up as zombies and parade the mall with the legions of mindless shoppers. There are many reasons for joining in. Off-set what may go down as the year global warming really hit. Escape the marketing mind games brought on by commercials and embrace your own holiday vision. Be it a non-stressed day at home with the fam, or a full-on protest assault, the biggest pay-off is to keep the Buy Nothing Day spirit in your heart year round and make responsible purchases if you must purchase at all.

Vice Travel Guide Screening

Vice Magazine, known for promoting global hedonism (not to mention their dos and donts page I'm re-obsessed with) is coming out with a new DVD this month. The Vice Guide to Travel. It's not a lonely planet guide on film by any means, more like a primer to where the largest illegal arms dealers are in the world, or where drug lords go to party in Rio de Janeiro, or what really is going down in Chernobyl right now. Johnny Knoxville and David Cross round out a group of celebrity and daring journalists' journeys to the center of these non-vacation destinations. The mini-trailer is enough to scare me away from Pakistan for a while longer.
I Heart Comix hosts this FREE screening at Safari Sam's tomorrow night. Get there early for a seat or show up late for the bands that will play afterwards and stand wherever you can.

Vice Guide To Travel Advance Screening
Tuesday, Nov. 21

Music Review: Jon Brion at Largo

Jon Brion at Largo: Friday Nov. 17.
Firstly, Largo has a lot of rules. In order to see Jon Brion (famed music producer of Fiona Apple, Beck, Kanye West, etc) play at his club you either have to A.) make a dinner reservation: which you can get by being music business connected or tracking the online reservation list like a desperate eBay auction or B.) wait in line to grab a seat at the bar. It's first come first serve, which the doorman enforces by handing out playing cards to the first 12 people in line. They are guaranteed bar stools and they usually start lining up at 5:30pm for the doors to open at 8:00pm. Everyone else gets standing room. Once inside it's like being on an airplane: no cell phones, no cameras, no recording, no electronic devices of any kind, and keep your arms and legs out of the aisles. Do not talk once the show begins and please abide the two drink minimum. Friday night was also $15 cash cover at the door. Exact change will get you a smile, saving spots in line will get you the hairy eyeball.
The card method is good for those of us fortunate to leave work early on a Friday night and beat traffic. Then you and your party can forgo the line outside and enjoy the local eateries on Fairfax the come back when the doors open around 8:30. That is, if you and your party can't get a dinner reservation at Largo. And beware: those parties that don't fill their dinner reservation will be forced to forfeit their table. So you will see the line of reservation people asking the standing room only line people if they would like to fill the empty seat at their table. Jon Brion usually starts the show around 10:00pm once everyone is seated. Last Friday he was unhappy with his sound check and spent a while fine tuning the drum kit. I was exhausted by the time the doors opened around 9:30 and the rules exhausted me more.
But once the show got under way and a cocktail was in front of me, the dark walls of the Largo drew me in. All that waiting and rule following led up to one amazing show: You are in Jon's world now and everything here from the pasta menu to the antiquarian upright piano is genius.
Girls with pretty haricuts and short dresses turned to their dates with I-can't-believe-it gasps on their faces every time Brion sampled once, twice, and thrice loops of drums, piano, bass lines and then played guitar along to his one man band creation in a melody too perfect for words. Brion's perfectionist attention to the meticulous musical details is what sets him apart. You can picture his years of recording experience behind a mixing console as he makes each track come alive on stage. He makes a killing here at Largo among faithful fans. You'll meet a lot of regulars at Largo and a lot of people now swearing they will soon be regulars. They love that they're invited to Brion's playground. His hits from soundtracks like "Knock Yourself Out" was barely played towards the audience. Other times he looked like Elliot Smith with a craned neck at the microphone earnestly singing every line from "That's Just What You Are". Usually his sets consist of all requests or attempts from the audience to stump him. He's more than a pop music dictionary, more like a sideshow freak who can name fifty songs for every three-chord progression. His covers are legendary here. I was giddy when he mixed "Gigantic" by the Pixies into "Jessie's Girl" and then morphed seamlessly into the Beatles "Taxman" which took the night into a Beatles medley unlike any supergroup could dream of.
Set list below courtesy of the Jon Brion Tendinitis Report (he had to stop doing shows for a while to rest an ailing wrist and even now cuts the shows back from the usual 4-5 hours to a mere 2 or 3)

Celeb Sighting

Two time Project Runway contestant Daniel Franco at the Arclight, looking more svelte than the last time I ran into him at Brass Monkey's karaoke night. Looks like he was taking in a matinee with a lady friend and ogling the costume display from "Bobby" in the lobby.

Rose Bowl!

No, not the college game - the Flea Market! Every second Sunday of the month the entire perimeter of the Pasadena Rose Bowl becomes a giant flea market. If you are looking for anything particular of the vintage or collectible kind, they've got it here. In fact, they've got dozens and they're willing to haggle. These vendors know their stuff. Everytime I buy something it comes with a story - my version of an authenticity certificate. And if you can't find it, enjoy the walk, the Pasadena sunshine and the frozen lemonade - there are stands everywhere. And then come back next month. It will be there.

Regular $7.00 admission starts at 9:00am. VIP admission goes up before then til 5:00am but it's fun to go towards the end of the day and catch the bargains as vendors start loading their trucks around 3:00pm. You can play the ol' "I'll take that antique vanity off your hands Mister."
Free easy parking.

Upcoming Flea Markets: Sundays
Dec. 10, Jan. 14, Feb. 11, Mar. 11, Apr. 8, May 13

Have you ever seen this many owl pendants in one place?

Movie theater seats, dress form, church pews = best living room ever.

An impressive collection of skateboards circa 1970.

The owner of this pretty chandelier would give it to me for $60 but charge me $30 for taking the picture.

Pristine condition antique tablecloths.

Too early for stocking stuffers?

Just about the best boots I've seen.

Frogtown Artwalk

Once upon a time in the 1960s frogs hopped out of the LA river and invaded a small neighborhood. The 'hood in the Elysian Valley tucked between the I-5 and 2-North freeways has been nicknamed Frogtown ever since.
Tomorrow night the galleries, warehouses and shops off Riverside open their doors. Lovecraft Biofuels will hold a conversion demonstration at their new second headquarters. An entire loft building hosts original photography and art. Famed LA artists Sharon & Frank Romero open the Lil Frogtown Gallery. There's also a couple emerging architecture firms extending Frogtown hospitality.

City Budget Speak Out

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council is holding a town hall style meeting tonight in conjunction with the other East LA neighborhoods to speak out about the city's new budget plans for the coming year. Hosted by The Department of Neighborhood Empowerment and the Office of the Mayor, this community forum hopes to give neighborhood voices a chance to be heard. The city will outline their plan for next year, probably cutting the budget drastically. This is every local's chance to add what's missing to the city's outlook for 2007 or remove measures. If you can't make the meeting but would like to express your opinion take the mayor's survey. It's very straight-forward and enlightening to know what the city thinks should be its major improvements including fair housing, transportation, environmental protection, and security. The survey takes less than 10 minutes and appears to be a good way to make a little dent in the system before the system dents you.

Tuesday Nov. 14
6:30-9:00pm
Glassell Park Community Center (in the Public Storage building at 3750 N. Verdugo Rd. and Eagle Rock Blvd.)
From Silver Lake, take the 2 and exit Eagle Rock Blvd. and you'll see the building. There's plenty of parking.

Boutique Hunt on Vermont

As everyone is running off to the next H&M opening I'm heading back to the sales racks in Los Feliz. With an attractive selection of shops, you can spend one weekend afternoon walking just one street. Vermont Avenue (North of Hollywood Blvd. South of Franklin) is home to many cutting-edge boutiques with unexpected bargains among the indie designers and trendy labels. On Vermont Avenue this season there seems to be a never ending sale in three particularly fabulous shops.
1. Atmosphere
1728 N. Vermont
323.666.8420
I recently purchased the perfect off-white dress for a wedding here. Yes, I know you're not supposed to wear white to someone's wedding other than your own, but I couldn't help it. Anything that helps me look like I'm keeping a healthy tan glow amidst the onset of winter, I'll take. A friend with me also picked up some amazing boots and an outfit completely out of the bargain bin. Atmosphere also keeps a stock of gifty housewares and men's clothing.

2. Bejon & Deheg
1756 N. Vermont
323.668.1103
You won't notice the sign at first, but you will see some hippie-inspired sun dresses in the window. On further inspection the store has two plentiful sales racks towards the back with sun dresses galore in all styles. A couple pretty embroidered pieces will get rid of your winter blues when worn under comfy sweaters.

3. Zen Tropa
1720 N. Vermont
323.913.3091
Their 50% & up sale seems to have been going on for months now. Under an advertisement for remodeling I don't see the store taping up its windows yet so stop in and grab deep discounted silk kimono tops and dresses as well as slacks and cutesy tank tops while you can. Don't ask me. Boutiques make their own rules.

Gallery Openings on a Saturday Night

I am always so relieved when art gallery openings happen on the weekends. More people show up and I can stay out late! These two receptions this Saturday in Silver Lake would be the perfect pre-party stop.
Metro Gallery hosts a dual opening for Sonia Romero and Connie Gregory. Romero's folk art inspired paintings and prints will echo her family's rich influence on the LA art scene - her parents are renowned Chicano artists Nancy & Frank Romero. Gregory's pieces verge on the spooky side with elephant boys, wide eyed cats in little girl dresses, and tiny deer showing up in her paintings. She calls the collection "Tales From The Root Cellar".

The gallery known as Junc throws an opening for two image designer/illustrators. Justin Wood throws linear and non-linear storytelling into his technology inspired illustrations and gets quite a bit of magazine work. Highly recognized Oksana Badrak's illustrations explore otherworldly elements and get a little naughty. You can buy her prints through Thumbtack Press, a great online art resource.

Girlshop

Bored at work? Tired of the same old shopping sites to browse? We all know online shopping is the new window shopping and my fave destination is girlshop.com. Consider it hundreds of boutiques, all price ranges, at your fingertips. Most of the shops are updated monthly, rotating out a choice collection of the cutest new trends. Go to the sale section first to browse deals at all boutiques at once.

Long and luxe vest from Geren Ford.

Backless ruffle top, sixties inspired and 100% silk by Who Cares.

Triple wrap watches in various colors and styles from La Mer designs.

I've seen their brother site guyshop grow over the last couple years too. A haven for Eurotrash deconstructed suits no longer, there's tons of gift ideas. Start your shopping (or wish list!) early.

Scavenger Hunt - Postponed

A letter from LA Scavenger Hunt :

The LA Scavenger Hunt has been postponed untill April of 2007.

The reason for the cancellation is my health. I have been having a stomach problem for weeks and a few days back it hit a peak. It was then I realized that I needed to take a break and focus on my health. Basically, I need to rest. I apologize to all those looking forward to the hunt on Saturday. I hope you still come out in April and I promise it will be just as amazing.

Take care,
Sean Carlson

Please repost this. The last thing that I would like is people showing up on Saturday afternoon expecting to be a part of an event that is cancelled. thanks a bunch.

Los Abandoned

They're the download of the week on Latino iTunes. They're all over the radio and making playlists of years all over country. They're new band to me: Los Abandoned. You may have heard their single "Stalk U" over and over on KROQ and Indie 103.1 and like me, was dubious at first to say the least. It sounded like it could be the Suicide Girls' debut album. The chorus is too repetitive; too neo-Green Day. But after the sixth or seventh air play the lyrics become perfectly profound and outrageously catchy as the listener follows a girl's obsession with an art student who "looks like a Charlie" and creates Drew Barrymore installations. The rest of the album pays tribute to the band's bilingual background proving more Spanglish enhanced melodies in songs like "Van Nuys (es very nice)" the story of a young punk going to the Valley. "Me Quieren en Chile" had some airplay last year on KCRW's world music hour. A pop-punk song completely in Spanish that never loses a contemporary nor interpersonal edge. Lady P on lead vocals has been around the LA music scene for quite some years but her youthful energy backed by Casios and electric guitars sounds super fresh even to this gringas ears.

Los Abandoned opens for Colombian band Aterciopelados tonight at The Fonda. Discounted tickets available through Goldenvoice. Use Password GOLDEN.

When Murals Were Dangerous

David Alfaro Siqueiros, was a prolific artist and activist but only created three murals in the United States, all in Los Angeles during a six-month stay in 1932. Two of his works were censored while the third, less controversial one was moved to Santa Barbara. Thursday evening KPCC's Patt Morrison will moderate a discussion about Siqueiros, his murals, LA history, and public art. This is a public program part of an ongoing speaker series for a future exhibition, Legacy & Legend: Siqueiros & América Tropical Censorship Defied, sponsored by The Los Angeles Times and Washington Mutual. The event is free but there's limited seating. Ensure a reservation by responding to legacy@causeconnect.net no later than Wednesday Nov. 8 Noon. May need to show photo ID at door.

Griffith Observatory Reopens

Everyone I know who moved to LA in the last couple of years always asked, what's that big dome building at the top of Griffith Park? Since closing its doors for massive renovation in 2002, the Griffith Observatory & Planetarium has remained that mysterious landmark more known for a movie backdrop than housing the most looked through telescope in the world. Amazing, huh? Now hundreds more will get a chance to peek through the observatory's two world famous telescopes as well as experience the same attractions guests did at original opening almost 70 years ago, like Tesla spheres and scaled planet models. Ever wonder what you would weigh on Venus? They have special scales for every planet's unique gravity. The planetarium still hosts its live starshow, made famous in Rebel Without A Cause, but has modern-day visual effects thrown into the classic showcase of galaxies and constellations. The Observatory has a new theater too, thanks to Leonard "Spock" Nemoy. For now the Observatory will be the top of every tourist and Angeleno's list of things to do, and you'll have to book a reservation to ride one of the shuttles up the hill until parking opens up. Two stops are at the Zoo and Hollywood & Highland. On the bus your visit to the Observatory will begin with informational videos and guides on board. Parking is also available at the Greek Theater for those who want to hike or bike up the hill. You'll still need to make a reservation and can only do so 48 hours in advance. So the question is, is it worth it to go now? The hiking and planetarium show sound like a great weekend date but I'm waiting a little longer to enjoy the entire facility when special exhibits and other films start making their way in. Or join up the Volunteer Program in February 2007. Reservations and shuttles will still be necessary for probably quite some time and hopefully they don't plan on expanding the parking lot at the top. I don't ever want to look up into the Hollywood Hills and see traffic.

Griffith Observatory - Reservations
Open Tuesday - Friday Noon-10:00pm
Open Saturday-Sunday 10:00am - 10:00pm

Admission
Adults $8
Children & Seniors $4

Planetarium Shows (every hour)
Adults $7
Seniors $5
Children $3

Roller Derby Smackdown in Little Tokyo

Not too long ago I attended my first Roller Derby banked track bout. That's when the girls play an indoor track with more speed and more spills. After a year of logistical nigthmares, the LA Derby Dolls have their home for their four fierce teams back, the top floor of the Little Tokyo mall downtown. Saturday is the championship bout which wraps up the main season. They'll fill the floor with independent vendors, two bars, a beer garden, and a live band stage all to entertain the crowd. But everyone's there to see the top LA teams, Sirens and Fight Crew duke it out. The Sirens tough defense was no match for Fight Crew at the last bout as they were consistently lapped by Fight Crew's speed, possibly the fastest team on the West Coast right now. Fight Crew gained an unheard of 20 point lead. I think it's time for an upset and the crowd will be psyched for one. Roller skates, rockabilly, and sushi all under one roof? Too good to be true.

Saturday November 4, 2006 - 8PM (Doors @ 6:30PM)
333 S Alameda (Alameda & 3rd St) Los Angeles
Little Tokyo Shopping Center - Top Floor
General Admission for $15 gets you standing room. VIP tickets for $35 guarantees a special seat. Parking $5

P.S. Even though this is the final match of the season, check back for details of the Amatuer bout on Dec. 2 - where all the new Derby Dolls take the infamous banked track for the first time.
